DISNEY VETOES POTENTIAL SALE OF MAGAZINES.

Byline: Dave McNary Daily News Staff Writer

A week after putting them on the sales block, Walt Disney Noun 1. Walt Disney - United States film maker who pioneered animated cartoons and created such characters as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck; founded Disneyland (1901-1966)

Disney had announced Jan. 28 that it might sell the newspapers and magazines it bought as part of its takeover of Capital Cities/ABC Inc., prompting analysts to speculate that Disney could fetch up to $3 billion from sales. The Burbank-based entertainment giant also said it could retain some of the publications, swap them or spin them off to shareholders.

He was born Johan Ludvig Emil Dreyer in Copenhagen. In 1874, at the age of 22, he went to Ireland to work as the assistant of Lord Rosse (the son and successor of the

Its area of domination is checked by its main rival, The Dallas Morning News  newspapers, medical publications and the Chilton Co. group of trade publications. He said a decision will be made within a year.

Dreyer reported that all the assets have drawn interest from potential buyers since Disney announced its $19 billion takeover of Capital Cities/ABC in August 1995.

``That interest became elevated following the announcement last week,'' he added.

Disney decided to keep Fairchild Publications, the parent of W and Women's Wear Daily, so it is keeping a string of publications that include Footwear News, Golf Pro, Salon News, Sports Style and Daily News Record, which covers the men's fashion industry. Los Angeles magazine, a monthly headquartered in Century City, will become part of Fairchild.

Dreyer said Fairchild's strength in consumer magazines fits well with other Disney publications, such as Disney Adventures, Discover, Family Fun and Family PC, and will give Disney two different platforms for launching new magazines. Fairchild plans to debut Jane, a magazine for women in their 20s, he noted.

Reports have emerged that Fairchild attracted buying interest from an S.I. Newhouses subsidiary, Advance Publications Inc., whose magazines include Conde Nast and the New Yorker, and Meigher Communications LP, whose titles include Saveur and Garden Design.
