DISNEY TO MAKE SPECIAL CONTRIBUTION IN HONOR OF MICKEY'S 65TH BIRTHDAY

BURBANK, Calif., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of Mickey Mouse's 65th birthday, this holiday season Disney Collectibles will make a special contribution to help underprivileged children in the United States. With every purchase of a Mickey Mouse sculpture from the Walt Disney Classics Collection, a fine line of animation art sculptures, Disney will donate a percentage of the proceeds to local programs assisting children in need of food, clothing and shelter.
The charitable effort is entitled "Sharing Smiles" and will run through November and December 1993. Proceeds will go to Variety Clubs International, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children through community based programs for more than 65 years.
According to Susanne Lee, vice president of Disney Collectibles, "This is the Walt Disney Classics Collection's first charitable effort, and we're excited about working with our collectors to provide some much-needed assistance to children in our local communities. What better way to commemorate Mickey's 65th birthday than by bringing smiles to children in need."
The Walt Disney Classics Collection made its debut last summer and has quickly become one of the most sought-after collectible lines on the market. The collection currently includes over 30 animation sculptures recreating classic Disney animated film moments including four Mickey Mouse sculptures, depicting the world's favorite mouse in various scenes from his film career. Available are a black & white 1930s-style Mickey capturing the flavor of early Disney animation; Mickey as the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" from "Fantasia" (1940); Maestro Michel Mouse conducting his wacky orchestra in "Symphony Hour" (1942); and Mickey as the stalwart seamster in "Brave Little Tailor" (1938), a role recently selected by Disney feature animators as a high-point in Mickey's career. The hand-made fine art sculptures range in price from $125 to $195.
The collection is developed by a talented team of Disney artists and animators, utilizing original animation drawings, color palettes, and other resources from the Disney Archives in order to recreate the characters as they first appeared on screen. To help convey the character's charm and personality, Disney consults with several of the famous "nine old men" who animated the original films including Marc Davis, Ward Kimball, Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas.
The Walt Disney Classics Collection is sold exclusively at selected fine department, gift and collectible stores, as well as Disney theme parks and The Disney Store. Suggested retail prices range from $55-$200 for open edition pieces and $200-$800 for limited editions. For more information, please call 818-567-5500
