The Disney concert hall complex, across from the Music Center, is expected to open in late 2003.

Murphy said he hopes to create a home for performers who are currently without any such facility.

``One of the most important goals I see is to build a sense of community around the space,'' he said. ``I hope it can be a home for artists and ensembles who don't have one now.''

Murphy will head a team that also includes curator Karin Higa of the Japanese American National Museum The Japanese American National Museum opened its doors in 1992.
