DISC Increases Library Storage Capacity With Integration of New 5.2 GB Optical Disk Drives.

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--June 15, 1998--DISC, Incorporated (NASDAQ: DCSR DCSR - Defense Supply Center Richmond (Richmond, VA)
DCSR - Deputy Chief of Staff for Recruiting
DCSR - Digital Crime Scene Reconstruction
DCSR - Display and Control/Storage and Retrieval
) today announced support of 5.2 GB optical drives from Sony in its optical library See optical disk library. systems (jukeboxes). Each drive provides users with 5.2 GB of storage on 5.25-inch rewritable and write-once disks - twice the storage available on previous-generation drives. Up to 32 drives and as many as 1,050 disks can be accommodated in DISC's new ORION series of automated storage libraries for a total of 5.4 TB of storage.

DISC's existing jukeboxes can be upgraded in the field to support the new high-capacity drives while continuing to use their existing 2.6 GB drives and media, thereby protecting customers' investments in their information storage systems. The new drives also read 650 MB optical disks A direct access disk written and read by light. CD, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and DVD-Video are read-only optical disks that are recorded at the time of manufacture and cannot be erased. CD-R, DVD-R, WORM and magneto-optic (in WORM mode) disks are write-once. They are recorded in the user's environment, but cannot be erased. CR-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and MO disks are rewritable.

Rewritable disks use either magneto-optic (MO) or phase change technology.
in both 1,024 and 512 bytes per sector formats.

Product Features

When used in conjunction with 5.2 GB media, the 5.2 GB drives offer 8x read and write speeds, average access time of 25 ms and data transfer rates between 2.2 and 4.6 Mbytes/second. These drives are made for high duty cycle (1) A machine's rated capacity to continuously perform work under normal conditions. It generally applies to mechanical devices such as printers, in which case it would indicate the number of pages that can be printed per month without a problem.

(2) The ratio of a device operating versus cooling down. An 80% duty cycle means that it is capable of running 80% of a specified time period and turned off for the remainder.
usage with reliability ratings of 750,000 Mean Swaps Between Failure (MSBF MSBF - Mean Swaps Between Failure
MSBF - Melbourne School Bands Festival (Australia)
MSBF - Michigan State Bar Foundation
.) DISC jukeboxes have a reliability rating of greater than 2,000,000 MSBF.

The increased capacity of the 5.2 GB drives reduces the cost per gigabyte (GB) of optical storage and allows customers to double their storage capacity in the same space requirements. This is important to the growing market of high-capacity storage libraries.
