DIS Examines Neenah Foundry, Near-Net-Shape Components at Fall Meeting. (Metalcasting Associations).

The Fall 2001 meeting of the Ductile Iron Ductile iron, also called ductile cast iron or nodular cast iron, is a type of cast iron invented in 1943 by Keith Millis[1]. While most varieties of cast iron are brittle, ductile iron is much more ductile, as the name implies.  Society (DIS), held October 3-5 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin Oshkosh is a city located where the Fox River enters Lake Winnebago in Winnebago County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 62,916. It has a metropolitan area of 159,972 people. , focused on improving casting quality through processes, technology and specifications. In addition to the conference's eight technical presentations, a tour of Neenah Foundry Co., Neenah, Wisconsin Neenah is a city on Lake Winnebago in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 24,507 at the 2000 census. The city is surrounded by, but is politically independent of, the Town of Neenah. , and its advanced oxidation technology was provided.

Neenah is a 940-employee gray and ductile iron foundry serving the municipal/construction, heavy-duty truck, agriculture and compressor industries. Its advanced oxidation technology is the result of the foundry's drive to reduce green sand emissions and improve sand consistency in its high-production vertically parted molding lines. (For more information on advanced oxidation, see "2001 Foundry of the Year: Neenah Foundry Co," modern casting, July 2001, pp. 24-28).

In a conference presentation titled, "Near Net Shape Ductile Components Using Semi Solid Forming," P.H. Mani Mani (mä`nē): see Manichaeism.

Decatur is the largest city and the county seat of Macon County in the U.S. state of Illinois. The city, known as "The Soybean Capital of the World" was founded in 1836 and is located in Central Illinois along the Sangamon
. In this process, ductile iron between the solid and liquid phase is injected under high pressure into a metal, ceramic or graphite die. According to Mani, as a hybrid between casting and forging, the process offers:

* closer near-net-shape capabilities than investment and diecasting;

* quiescent mold fill, reducing defects related to turbulence;

* uniformly fine grain structure;

* high surface finish;

* minimal to no porosity;

* near 100% yield;

* reduced energy consumption due to lower operating temperatures and lower metal heat content.

The process, which has a 90 sec cycle time from solid metal billet to cast component, was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at Cambridge; coeducational; chartered 1861, opened 1865 in Boston, moved 1916. It has long been recognized as an outstanding technological institute and its Sloan School of Management has notable programs in business,  in 1970.

Mani stated that ferrous casting production using the process is underway in Europe. Also, compacted graphite iron (CGI CGI
