IRELAND endured a nightmare start to Euro 2012 as they were pole-axed in Poznan by a classy Croatia outfit.

Giovanni Trapattoni's troops were counting on a result against the Croats to boost their hopes of escaping Group C, which also includes the powerhouses of Italy and Spain.

But the men in green suffered an early setback when Mario Mandzukic nodded beyond Shay Given to give the Croats the lead in three minutes.

Sean St Ledger Sean St Ledger-Hall (born 28 December 1984 in Birmingham) is a footballer for Football League Championship Side Preston North End.

St Ledger is a central defender by trade but has played on either flank, and midfield during his spell with Peterborough United.
 squared the game after 19 minutes with a fine header but that was as good as it got for Trapattoni's side.

Former Rangers strike ace Nikica Jelavic edged Slaven Bilic's side into the lead with a delightful finish just before the break.

And the misery was complete in 49 minutes when Mandzukic nodded his second via a deflection off the luckless Given.
