The price cut comes after upstart EchoStar slashed prices for its system to $199 from $499 last month. To retain customers, cable operators such as TCI (Trustworthy Computing Initiative) An umbrella term from Microsoft for its efforts to improve security in Windows. DirecTV leads the direct broadcast television industry, with about 1.7 million subscribers. EchoStar's subscribers will more than double to 300,000 from 127,000 by Dec. 31, said Charles Ergen, chairman and chief executive.

In addition to purchasing the system to receive the TV signal, satellite TV customers pay a subscriber fee.

DirecTV customers pay $29.95 a month for its most popular package, which has 45 video channels and 31 CD-quality audio channels. Englewood, Colo.-based EchoStar charges $300 for a one-year subscription to 40 cable channels and 30 audio channels.
