DIRECTV(TM) SIGNS THIRD MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STUDIO; UNIVERSAL PICTURES TO BE DISTRIBUTED DIRECT-TO-HOME

LOS ANGELES, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- DirecTv Inc., a unit of GM Hughes Electronics, expanded its lineup of hit movies delivered directly to consumers' homes by signing a pay-per-view output agreement with Universal Pay Television for Universal Pictures, one of the leading major motion picture studios in the country. Universal will provide DirecTv with current release films and events in a standard pay-per-view window.
Through DirecTv(TM), North America's first high-power direct broadcast satellite (DBS) service, every television household equipped with an 18-inch satellite antenna will have access to 150 channels of programming entertainment including impulse pay-per-view movies. Universal will join with Paramount Pictures and Columbia TriStar International Television in providing current hit theatrical films and popular classic movies for the DirecTv programming service. Turner Broadcasting System will also make available classic movies from its MGM film library for the DirecTv pay-per-view movie offerings. The cost for pay-per-view events and movies will be competitive with current pay-per- view pricing.
"We are very pleased that DirecTv will be distributing many of the high-quality films produced by Universal Pictures," said DirecTv President Eddy Hartenstein. "This agreement further signifies the overall commitment by DirecTv to deliver a compelling array of entertainment programming to consumers, and we believe Universal films will contribute significantly to our movie offerings."
According to Jerry Hartman, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Universal Pay Television, "We at Universal are delighted to be part of this new age of entertainment. We see great consumer benefit and satisfaction to the near video on-demand provided by the 50 or more channels of pay-per-view entertainment offered by DirecTv."
DirecTv will emulate a video store in both convenience and programming selection by offering 50 to 60 channels of movies each day, with popular hits showing every 30 minutes. DirecTv subscribers will select films on impulse from a user-friendly remote control either by title from the on-screen menu or from a preview channel showing trailers of the current films.
The DirecTv pay-per-view service will be offered to all television households subscribing to any DirecTv programming and equipped with the DSS(TM) (Digital Satellite System) manufactured by Thomson Consumer Electronics under the RCA brand name. DSS is a three-component home receiving system consisting of an 18-inch satellite antenna, a compact decoder box and a remote control that will retail for approximately $700. Viewers will receive high-quality digital video images and CD-quality sound for all DirecTv programming selections.
