DIRECTORS PROPOSING LARGER BOARD HOSPITAL PANEL MAY ADD TWO.

Hospital directors are considering increasing the size of the publicly elected board, which currently has five members, three of them up for re-election in November.

One hospital director said expanding the board from five to seven members would help increase representation, but another described it as a costly ploy ploy

by current leaders to maintain control.

``I think that spreading out the power a little bit would be good. I think there's an awful lot of work to be done, and I think the more representation that you have, the better decisions you make,'' director June Snow said. ``There are some positives to having a larger board. This is a huge time commitment. It probably should be divided out among more people.''

, a frequent critic of the board majority, said board members earn about $6,000 a year in meeting stipends, so electing two additional directors would cost the hospital $48,000, not including travel costs.

``They see that the public is not happy with them, and they want to keep control of it,'' Fox said. ``They want to dilute di·lute

the board and give them a better chance to keep their administration in power.''

The board will meet today at 7:30 p.m. in Conference Room 15 in the Outpatient outpatient /out·pa·tient/ (-pa-shent) a patient who comes to the hospital, clinic, or dispensary for diagnosis and/or treatment but does not occupy a bed.

The proposal for expanding the board was put on the agenda at the request of director Deborah Rice, who along with Fox and Dr. Abdallah Farrukh is up for re-election Nov. 2.

Rice did not respond to a request for a comment Tuesday.

Hospital attorney Frank Michelizzi said there are two ways to increase the size of the board. The board can authorize To empower another with the legal right to perform an action.

it by resolution or voters can petition to have the issue placed on an election ballot.

``We are going to look at it at the board meeting and get public input and then we will decide,'' Snow said.

As far as Fox's criticism, Snow said she didn't see how adding people to the panel would maintain the board majority.

``Most of our friends wouldn't run if their life depended on it because they have seen what a time-consuming job it is,'' Snow said.
