DIRECTOR SOON TO HAVE CALLING CARD; IT'S A WRAP; NOW COMES EDITING AND DUBBING PROCESS.

Byline: Steve Carney Staff Writer

She had a tight schedule and a tighter budget, but by day's end Monday, Joanne Small ``got the goods.''

The aspiring director shot all the footage she would need to complete her first film. But a lot of work remains.

``I've done everything I can to ensure the success of this project,'' said the Studio City resident.

``If this doesn't get me a paying job, I shouldn't be making movies.''

Small has labored for years in New York New York, state, United States

She got her shot this Spring when the American Film Institute American Film Institute (AFI), nonprofit organization established in Washington, D.C., in 1967 by the National Endowment for the Arts to preserve and catalog American films and television, to provide work grants for new and established filmmakers, and to increase  picked her for its Directing Workshop for Women.

Small is banking that her project, a surreal tale of a young man's cross-country drive called ``Joey Was Here,'' will get the attention of producers who give out directing jobs in movies and television.

``If they don't recognize the craftsmanship in this, especially for the budget, I'm in the wrong business,'' she said.

But Scott Carlson, a longtime friend working as a producer on ``Joey,'' has faith: ``She's got the goods.''

``This is going to be her calling card,'' said Carlson, of North Hollywood. ``This is the first project that's going to have `Directed by Joanne Small' on it.''

Survival was still in question by midday Monday - the last of Small's five-day schedule - as she tried to squeeze everything in, darting about the Canoga Park mechanic's shop that served as one of the sets, checking equipment, advising her lead actor, nervously pinning her long, black hair and maintaining the ebullient air she uses to boost her crew.

Small hopes that ``Joey Was Here'' will net her a job by next year, and launch a career eventually leading to her directing a feature film a year.

``I am a director. This is going to happen,'' she said. ``You need that kind of conviction. You need that faith for these things "These Things" is an EP by She Wants Revenge, released in 2005 by Perfect Kiss, a subsidiary of Geffen Records. Music Video

That dream has already been realized by several of her predecessors in the workshop, which began in 1974 with an inaugural class that included poet Maya Angelou Editing of this page by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled until (UTC) due to vandalism.  and actors Ellen Burstyn and Lee Grant.

``It changed my life. It's a remarkable program,'' said Grant, an Oscar-winning actress who turned to directing and won an Academy Award in 1987 for her documentary on homelessness, ``Down and Out in America.''

``I don't want to act anymore. This is really my outlet,'' Grant said.

Randa Haines was a script supervisor - like Small - when she took part in the second workshop, in 1975. Since then she's directed ``Children of a Lesser God,'' ``The Doctor'' and ``Dance With Me.''

``I went in knowing this was my shot. This was my chance to find out whether I was a director or not,'' she said of the women's workshop. ``It was a very important turning point in my life.''

Her AFI short film led to television and feature work - the path Small hopes to repeat.

``I'd love to set the kind of example for anybody to do something they think is impossible,'' she said. ``Go for it - if I can do it, you can do it. There's nothing special about me.

``I feel that the future is going to be extremely bright,'' Small said. ``I'm so ready to become the artist that's already inside of me.''
