PALMDALE -- Six businesses and eight individuals will be honored at the annual Athena Awards dinner for demonstrating excellence in their professions, improving the lives of people in their community and helping women realize their leadership potential.

The event is Nov. 9 at the Larry Chimbole Cultural Center, 38350 Sierra Highway. Cocktails and entertainment will begin at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. The theme is ``Every Woman Matters.'' The award recipients in the business and individual categories will be selected by a committee of community leaders. All the nominees will be honored at the dinner, organizers said.

Hosted in the Antelope Valley by the Zonta Foundation of the Antelope Valley, the Athena Awards were created in 1982 in Lansing, Mich., and have grown to include hundreds of cities around the United States and in several other countries.
