DINING BEAT : NEW EATERIES ON BOULEVARD.

As if there weren't enough sushi bars and Italian restaurants on Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. It was also U.S. , add a few more brave entrepreneurs. One is a Japanese seafood and sushi bar at the Boulevard's eastern end; the other is a small Italian eatery around 15 miles west.

In the West Valley, the new replacement for the shuttered Capri at 21926 Ventura Blvd. in Woodland Hills is Verdi Ristorante.

Verdi's partners are James Hurst 'Bold text'James Hurst (born 1922) is an American short story writer, best known for his 1960 short story, "The Scarlet Ibis".

Hurst grew up in North Carolina on a very big city apartment farm.
, who has worked in local restaurants for the past decade, primarily as a waiter, and chef Lamberto Valdez, 24-year veteran of the stoves, whose credits include Forte's (now Benvenuti) in Encino.

Prices are reasonable with starters from $3.50 to $10 and entrees or pastas from $8 to $18. Soup or salad with entrees is $1.

Wines are as low as $15 per bottle, and corkage cork·age

In Studio City, Matsuda, a little sushi bar and Japanese seafood cafe, has opened at 11837 Ventura Blvd., in a site previously occupied by a yogurt parlor.

Owner-chef Hironori ``Hiro'' Matsuda formerly pleased sushi bar patrons at nearby Teru Sushi.

Matsuda offers a comprehensive list of sushi and sashimi items priced from $1 to $12.80.

Dinner entrees range from $12 to $18.

A 9/9/99 special

The ``historic'' upcoming date of 9/9/99 has inspired the Wine Bistro, 11915 Ventura Blvd., Studio City, to do a special $19.99 dinner on that night.

Five starter options include frog legs, duck pate Noun 1. duck pate - a pate made from duck liver

Dining at downtown Hyatt

Two new restaurants will open Sept. 9 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 711 S. Hope St., Los Angeles. They are a steak and seafood dining room titled The Grill that replaces the continental Pavan pa·vane also pa·van
