As French restaurants rebound against a long period of Italian domination, Cafe Saint Michel is the latest of the local Gallic debuts worth noting.

Open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily and till midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, its menu features a dozen les croques open-face sandwiches served with pommes frites (french fries).

With everything under $8, this could be a very popular concept.

Salads provide an alternative or addition, depending on how big a meal the customer wants. A list of 11 with the same price range as the sandwiches are topped with many of the same feature ingredients - cheeses, grilled chicken, smoked salmon, grilled steak or lamb et al.

French desserts ($3 and $3.50) include a crepes dish and a chocolate mousse, and the starter list has a couple of smaller salads, two soups and a couple of assiettes (platters), one with only cheeses, the other charcuterie.

A small wine list has bottles priced from $12 to $18.
