DINING BEAT : CATFISH WORTH PURRING ABOUT.

Catfish was hot for a while (it's reportedly America's fifth most popular fish), but it seems to have slipped a bit in favor of halibut halibut: see flatfish.

Chili days ahead

Pro and amateur chili-makers will vie at the Outlaw Chili Society's annual Old Pasadena Chili Cook-Off June 27 and 28.

The event is in Mercantile Alley (south of Colorado Boulevard at Fair Oaks) in Old Town Pasadena Built on the foundation of one of the oldest, most beautiful and most prosperous cities in California, Old Pasadena arose from the ashes of a decaying bowery that had a well deserved patina of homeless and hippie. .

The pros go at it starting at noon June 27 with a number of restaurants entered, including Robin's, Country Star, McCormick & Schmick's, Il Fornaio, Wild Thyme, Hamburger Hamlet, Beckham's Place, Johnny Rockets and Chuy's.

Winner in the pro division gets a trip for two anywhere Continental Airlines flies.

The amateur chili contest and a car show are scheduled for 1 p.m. June 28.

Admission at the door is $10 per day; an advance ticket for two days is $15. Food and live music are included.
