DINING BEAT : BROOKLYN IN THE VALLEY.

Byline: Larry Lipson

The southwest corner of Ventura and Van Nuys boulevards in Sherman Oaks has been annexed by Brooklyn.

A new restaurant there called the Brooklyn Diner is serving ``New Yawk-style American ethnic'' food from breakfast through dinner featuring mostly Jewish deli and Italian-accented fare.

Full of atrocious spelling (purposely, we assume), the menu lists everything but the kitchen sink. Among the myriad offerings are Brooklyn clam chowder chowder, stew of fish or shellfish with potatoes, onions, and pork (usually salt pork), thickened with crumbled hard bread. The name chowder seems to have originated from the French word chaudière , pasta ``fazul,'' grandpa's chicken noodle soup Noodle soup refers to a variety of dishes with noodles served in stock and other ingredients. The dish is an Asian staple. Varieties

10 'n 20 years later ...

After 30 years in Van Nuys at 5807 Van Nuys Blvd. Four 'n 20, a family restaurant specializing in freshly baked pies, has moved to Sherman Oaks.

But it's only a few blocks away and still on Van Nuys Boulevard, now at number 5530 which formerly held the Fish Broiler broiler

Co-owner Michael O'Donnell said the move happened because the building is being torn down for an auto agency expansion.

O'Donnell, who has operated Four 'n 20 for 20 years with partner David Burkin, must have been inspired by the ghosts of the Sherman Oaks building because he's starting to serve fresh fish plates.

Incidentally, everything on the current regular menu is priced under $11, and that includes fresh salmon and red snapper dishes, steaks and chops.

Fond remembrance

They will prepare a gala dinner ($250) to be served with numerous donated wines, all proceeds going to the Patrick Clark Family Trust for the college education of Clark's children.
