DINING BEAT\Sampling new items.

Byline: Larry Lipson

As the new year gets under way, there are several new restaurants to try.

Already open are Krakus, a Polish restaurant - the only one in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.

Two more Valley newcomers, Encino's Papashon and the Matterhorn Chef in Van Nuys, appear to be off and running.

There are also some sad closings. Rocco's Milano in Sherman Oaks and Cafe Q in Encino were early holiday-season casualties. A little later last month, Roxxi in Pasadena shut its doors as news filtered down that Out Take Cafe, the popular Studio City eating place would take over the Roxxi facility and offer its imaginative and appealingly arranged dishes on oversize o·ver·size

Ironically, partner with Peter Karkos in the Out Take deal is Norman Cheng, who returns to the very place where he was the opening chef.

Meanwhile, surprising everyone, Tribeca in Encino went out with a bang.

The restaurant packed in 450 revelers on New Year's Eve and welcomed in 1996 by locking the doors permanently.

Not only that, but the original Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. Richard Chesterfield, owner of this and the already existing Monroe's at 6800 Westward Beach Road in Malibu, said the original beach restaurant would continue as usual.

He said the new Monroe's would be open for lunch, Sunday brunch and dinner, offer a piano bar piano bar

Chesterfield's signature curries and Caesar salad will be part of the menu, but a "heavier accent on seafood" will distinguish it from the original Monroe's fare, he said.
