DIGITAL WINS $30 MILLION INTEGRATION PROJECT AT AUSTRALIAN UTILITY; 32 ALPHA AXP SYSTEMS AND 1,100 PCS TO BE INSTALLED

MAYNARD, Mass., Sept. 21, /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) has been awarded a $30-million contract from the Queensland Electricity Commission (QEC) of Queensland, Australia, to re-engineer its information systems.
As the prime contractor leading a consortium of local suppliers, Digital will provide products as well as integration and consulting services throughout the organization. This is the largest computer systems contract ever awarded in Queensland.
"Digital represents the best solution for us after all factors are considered," said Tony McGrady, Queensland's Minister for Minerals and Energy. "As prime contractor, Digital brought together a team which included a number of Queensland-based companies. This shows us they can supply our long-term information systems needs cost-effectively."
According to Patricia C. Foye, Digital's vice president, Utilities Business Unit, "This contract confirms that our systems, application, and multivendor integration capabilities offer utility companies the business-based solution they need. Our strategy is to provide technology and services that unify diverse systems and bring people together. Our work with QEC, and other major utilities worldwide, underscores Digital's acceptance when users want competitive advantage."
Hardware and packaged software accounts for about a third of the contract fee, with the balance devoted to consulting and systems integration services. The contract is renewable for an additional five years.
Digital will install 32 Alpha AXP computer systems and 1,100 PCs at 11 sites over the first 21 months of the five-year contract. The new Digital systems will manage maintenance, materials, finances, payroll, and human resources, replacing existing mainframe computers, various other hardware and home-grown software. The systems are designed to support QEC's transition to a state-owned corporation by 1995. Digital's consortium partners, all Brisbane-based, are: SQL Systems which will manage maintenance and materials; Concept, a software house for payroll and human resources software; Datalec, Queensland's largest cabling company will install fiber optic cable across QEC's network; and Data#3, which will install DECpc 450 PCs and printers.
All application software for QEC is Oracle-based. Oracle worked with Digital in the development of software solutions for the winning bid. Ernst and Young also will help implement QEC's new business applications.
Two DEC 7000 AXP data center servers and a combination of 30 DEC 3000 AXP and DEC 4000 AXP workstations and servers will be linked in local area networks running Pathworks across FDDI.
Design and implementation of QEC's state-wide OSI data network will be done by engineers at Digital's networking and telecommunications R&D center at Bond University near Brisbane.
Queensland Electricity Commission supplies power to seven distribution agencies throughout Queensland. Many are expected to acquire applications, consulting services and systems from Digital in the coming years.
