DIGITAL EQUIPMENT TO PROVIDE TECHNOLOGY AND EMPLOYMENT MATCHING SERVICES
 AT NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE CONFERENCE
SAN DIEGO, Calif., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- When the National Urban League (NUL) Conference opens this Sunday at the San Diego Convention Hall, Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) will be on site providing the computer power and services to run the Job Opportunity Showcase.
The Showcase serves as a recruiting center to help the 200 companies exhibiting their products and services at the conference to find qualified minority candidates. Digital's job is to manage the computerized recruiting environment and to provide interviewing and job matching services.
On Monday, July 27, John Sims, vice president of Strategic Resources and a member of the NUL's Board of Trustees, will speak at the afternoon conference session on the subject of model education programs and inner city partnerships. "Our relationship to the National Urban League is long-standing," says Sims, "as is our corporate commitment to diversity and to assisting African Americans in the achievement of social and economic equality.
"Los Angeles has showed us some valuable lessons. The inner city can not be viewed as an isolated isle," adds Sims. "American industry must be part of the solution. Digital has learned the value of its own investments in the inner city. It is an investment that creates jobs in the surrounding neighborhood and brings diversity into our facilities. The end result is a unique display of productivity from our workforce."
In 1987, Digital provided a $1.5 million equipment grant to the League. "Digital's contribution has allowed the National Urban League to use technology to improve its effectiveness as a business dedicated to improving the lives of African Americans," says Frank Lomax III, executive vice president of the NUL. "As a result, there is a nationwide computer-based network operable at the League's New York headquarters and 114 affiliates offices."
Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard, Mass., is the leading worldwide supplier of networked computer systems, software and services. Digital pioneered and leads the industry in interactive, distributed and multivendor computing. Digital and its partners deliver the power to use the best integrated solutions -- from desktop to data center - in open information environments.
