 DIGITAL EQUIPMENT BOOSTS MASSIVELY PARALLEL DRIVE WITH NEW SOFTWARE
 TOOLS, AND NEXT GENERATION HARDWARE...'PARASPHERE'
 CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) today unveiled a comprehensive software suite for the fast growing massively parallel computing segment, including the first mainstream development tool and a new Fortran language compiler. A second generation massively parallel computer system and a new subsystem for high-speed, high-volume external data storage were also introduced by Digital.
 Software announced today is part of the newly defined PARASPHERE Software Environment, Digital's integrated approach to satisfy customers' comprehensive software requirements for this important high performance computing style. PARASPHERE software will include all future tools, languages, third party applications and operating system software for massively parallel hardware platforms marketed by Digital.
 Today's announcement includes a new implementation of the Digital Parallel Programming Environment (DPPE) that now incorporates the company's DEC FUSE CASE development toolkit. The new high performance Fortran language compiler has special features, based on specifications drawn up by a collaboration of Digital and other industry and research participants, that help developers convert traditional Fortran programs to run on parallel computers. BOOSTING APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT
 This announcement represents the first time a broad-based, mainstream CASE tool has been brought to massively parallel computing, according to David Stone, Vice President of Software Engineering. "The DEC FUSE environment is part of Digital's COHESION family, an industry- leading implementation of CASE products," he said. "CASE programming techniques are used to speed up new application program development, so bringing CASE to massively parallel computing represents an important step in the evolution of this growing market," said Charles Wilson, director of the company's Massively Parallel Systems Group. Market growth of massively parallel computers is expected by many observers to surpass $1 billion in sales by 1995.
 Other software in today's announcement were: DECmpp Parallel Performance Analyzer for fine tuning software programs; DECmpp Parallel Debugger for fault identification; DECmpp mage and math processing libraries; and DECmpp VAST-2 Optimizing Preprocessor for automatic translation of standard Fortran code into parallel code. NEW DECMPP HARDWARE SYSTEMS
 The new DECmpp 12000/Sx Model 200 systems announced today range from 1,024 to 16,384 processors and are priced from approximately $175,000 to $1.7 million, including front-end consoles and system software. Featuring 64KB of memory per processor array, these new systems can operate from 150 to 2400 MFLOPS (Millions of Floating Point Operations per Second), up to four times faster than the earlier Model 100 systems. They are available immediately. In-cabinet upgrades from Model 100 to Model 200 systems are also available. New hardware subsystems announced today include a high speed input/output channel, plus a variety of solid state disk and disk array systems. They are intended for users with large, transaction processing applications that require frequent, high-speed disk access. The new subsystems are priced from $132,000 and are available immediately.
 The new DECmpp 12000/Sx Model 200 systems join the Model 100 and the recently announced DECmpp 12000/Mx Model 100 systems in Digital's massively parallel systems line-up. DECmpp 12000/Sx systems are based on hardware technologies from MasPar Computer Corporation and use SIMD, or single-instruction, multiple-data architectures. DECmpp 12000/Mx systems use technologies from Intel Corporation, and are characterized by MIMD, or multiple-instruction, multiple-data architectures. "SIMD and MIMD are the two major styles of massively parallel computing today and are both very important for the applications each can address," said Sam Fuller, Digital's vice president of research., "Not only does Digital support both platforms, but today's PARASPHERE software announcement underscores Digital's commitment to bring this important technology into the mainstream for solving customer problems". Today's announcements were made at a press briefing at Digital's Cambridge Research Laboratory which uses the DECmpp 12000/Sx systems in visualization research.
