DIGITAL EQUIPMENT ANNOUNCES VOLUME PRICING FOR ITS ALPHA CHIP
HUDSON, Mass., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) today unveiled its 1993 volume pricing plans for the DECchip 21064, the world's fastest microprocessor, announced in February of this year. At 150 MegaHertz, the DECchip 21064 is the first in the Alpha microprocessor family of full 64-bit chips with address space many thousands of times greater than 32-bit implementations from IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Sun. Digital plans to offer future versions of the chip at higher performance.
For 1993, the unit price of the DECchip 21064 is $800 for quantities of more than 50,000 and $1,096 for quantities of more than 1,000. According to Ed Caldwell, vice president of Semiconductor Operations at Digital, "This means that our customers can get 100 percent more performance for about 60 percent more than they would pay for chips from our competitors. Our future pricing for the DECchip 21064 will follow the traditional semiconductor industry learning curve, i.e., price reductions of 15-20 percent per year."
The DECchip 21064, manufactured in Digital's state-of-the-art facilities in Hudson, Mass., and South Queensferry, Scotland, is available now for customer evaluation and will be available in quantity in July of this year.
