DIGITAL EQUIPMENT AND COMSHARE COMBINE
TO TACKLE CANADIAN EXECUTIVE/DECISION SUPPORT SOFTWARE MARKETS
TORONTO, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment of Canada Limited and Comshare Limited today announced that they will jointly market Comshare's Commander EIS and System W, as well as IFPS/Plus from the recent acquisition of Execucom Systems Corporation.
Digital Canada has signed Comshare Limited to its Cooperative Marketing Program (CMP) and named the Toronto-based company a Complementary Software House (CSH) in Canada.
"The CSH designation is a uniquely Canadian arrangement," said Ian Vaudry, Channels Marketing at Digital. "We assign Comshare an account manager and include the company within our overall marketing plans. It takes the agreement to a tactical, rather than just strategic focus." Under the CMP agreement, Comshare can use Digital's CMP logo, "which serves as an indicator to our sales force, as well as our customers, that this company is of strategic importance to Digital Canada."
Comshare's Executive and Decision Support Systems software enable executives and other professionals to more effectively make business decisions on products, markets, planning, and organizational performance by quickly and easily understanding critical information from within and outside their business.
Comshare's products are major components of Digital's portfolio of executive and decision-supt? applications that, through Network Application Support (NAS), enable users to easily access, analyze, and share business information throughout an organization.
"This is an exciting opportunity to work with a major player in the Canadian computer environment, to provide solutions to clients and not just sell hardware or software," said Don Kellett, Comshare's Canadian Director of Strategic Alliances. "We plan to work more closely with Digital to address the executive information and reporting needs of Digital and non-Digital clients and find ways of using Digital's open systems and our open software to meet those requirements."
EXECUTIVE INFORMATION SYSTEM
Commander EIS (Executive Information System) software gives executives individualized, highly refined summaries of information using a graphical user interface that requires no training. Commander EIS works in a client/server, PC-to-VAX environment. Executives use a mouse or touch screen on Apple Macintosh II, OS/2 or Windows 3.0 DOS platforms to easily review reports, charts, memos, and spreadsheets, and share this information with geographically-dispersed management teams.
System W DSS (Decision Support System) software and its PC counterpart, One-Up, are ideal for managers who need applications for financial modeling and management reporting. System W simplifies complex modeling for strategic planning, budgeting, forecasting, consolidation reporting, financial analysis, profitability, and inventory planning, allowing organizations to better prepare for and respond to changes in their business environment.
With the addition of Execucom's expertise in Ultrix, Comshare has significantly strengthened its decision support solutions for Digital customers, added Kellett. "Execucom competed in the same (EIS/DSS) market, but it also had a very strong UNIX capability through its Ultrix products, while our Digital products ran in the VMS operating system. In addition, they were developing a new product, a data interpretation system, for Ultrix and X-Windows, with support for Ultrix SQL databases like Ultrix/SQL, Ingres, and Oracle."
Comshare and Digital are working together to enhance these products to use Network Application Support (NAS) -- Digital's software and services for application integration in a networked, multi-vendor environment. This will link executive ease-of-use with enterprise network resources such as databases, electronic mail, and integrated office systems.
Through the Data Access Services of NAS, Commander EIS and System W users have direct access to multi-vendor databases such as DB2 through Digital's VAX Rdb/VMS. Commander EIS also offers an executive front end to Digital's market-leading integrated office system ALL-IN-1 for information sharing throughout the enterprise. Versions of Commander EIS and System W with these enhancements are now available.
The latest additions to Comshare's product family also include Paradigm, the first data interpretation system (DIS) developed for Digital environments.
Paradigm is a DIS that follows a "data first" as opposed to traditional "model first" approach. This means that it provides ad hoc, unstructured access to data and takes its structure from the ever- changing views generated by the user while querying the database. DIS tools use leading-edge technology such as multitasking workstations, graphical user interfaces and advanced artificial intelligence techniques to add power and flexibility to their analysis capabilities.
Commander EIS and System W are available from Comshare immediately for Digital's VAX/VMS systems. Comshare's IFPS/Plus is also available for Digital's VAX/VMS, VAX/Ultrix, and RISC/Ultrix platforms. Paradigm is available on VAX/VMS and RISC/Ultrix workstations running DECwindows and on networked PCs running Digital's PATHWORKS X-Windows Display Facility.
Software prices for typical Commander EIS, System W, and IFPS/Plus configurations start at CDN$10,000 based on VAX system size.
