DIGITAL DOMAIN AND SOFTIMAGE ENTER INTO STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP/TECHNOLOGY AGREEMENT; SOFTIMAGE ALSO INTRODUCES MENTAL RAY RENDERING SOFTWARE

MONTREAL, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Domain today announced that it has entered into a strategic partnership and technology agreement with SOFTIMAGE Inc., which includes an initial purchase of SOFTIMAGE products for its network of 36 computers. In addition, Digital Domain has recently acquired from SOFTIMAGE $4.7 million of Silicon Graphics hardware. Digital Domain is the next-generation digital production studio co-owned by James Cameron (The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2; Judgement Day); Stan Winston, Academy Award-winning character creator, who was responsible for the live action dinosaurs in Jurassic Park; Scott Ross, noted industry executive (formerly general manager of Industrial Light & Magic); and IBM.
SOFTIMAGE also announces its powerful new rendering software mental ray which offers all of the features traditionally expected of photorealistic rendering together with significant additional rendering functionality unique to the product. As a ray-tracing software, mental ray offers the widest feature set available on the market, including user definable shaders, motion blur, depth of field, lens effects, area light sources, multiple textures, displacement mapping, and edge merging. Mental ray has been designed to take full advantage of parallel hardware, and networks of parallel hardware without any user intervention, and makes optimal usage of the total memory available. This means users can render scenes in a fraction of the time it takes to render them on a single workstation, and also allows users to render scenes of much greater complexity than a single workstation can handle.
