ADDS MANUFACTURING CAPABILITY TO ITS MULTIPLE SOURCE PC STRATEGY
MAYNARD, Mass., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) announced today that it is augmenting its capacity to provide personal computers by using its Taiwan manufacturing facility to produce industry-standard PCs. This will complement the strong relationships that already exist with Tandy, Intel, and Olivetti. These three vendors will continue to supply Digital with a wide range of products.
Digital will utilize its world-class manufacturing facility in Taiwan for PC design and manufacture. This Taiwan operation is an MRPII Class A plant with a record of high volume, high quality manufacturing. Existing assets and workforce will be utilized, with no substantial increase in capital outlay. Final assembly and test will occur at locations in Canada and the U.S. Volume PC production at this site is expected to be reached by the end of the calendar year. The Taiwan plant also builds the company's line of VT terminals and the applicationDEC 433MP computer system.
According to John F. Smith, senior vice president, corporate operations, "Our strategy in the PC area always has been to use multiple sources. By expanding our supply base with internal resources, we are able to assure customers of a steady stream of products in high volume, an advantage a single source supplier does not have. Building our own PCs is part of our overall business strategy for the desktop and represents another step to continue moving aggressively into the PC market. On Jan. 21, the company announced Desktop Direct, our widely expanded direct merchant campaign aimed at the U.S. business PC buyer. Customer response to this campaign in the first weeks has far exceeded expectations."
"We have experienced tremendous growth in the PC area," Smith added. "The PC business is very important to us. We are targeting FORTUNE-class 1000 businesses in the U.S. and the largest 5000 firms worldwide with a complete product family that includes notebooks, desktop and deskside PCs, and a high performance PC workstation."
Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard, Mass., is the leading worldwide supplier of networked computer systems, software, and services. Digital pioneered and leads the industry in interactive, distributed and multivendor computing. Digital and its partners deliver the power to use the best integrated solutions -- from desktop to data center -- in open information environments.
