DIGITAL ANNOUNCES ITS INTENTION TO RELOCATE OPERATIONS FROM MAYNARD MILL COMPLEX; CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS STAFF WILL MOVE TO ANOTHER MAYNARD SITE

MAYNARD, Mass., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) announced today that it will move its operations from the Maynard Mill complex to other Digital-owned facilities beginning late this summer. The relocation process is expected to be complete within two years.
Digital's Corporate Headquarters will remain in Maynard. Headquarters staff will move to an existing building in the Powdermill Road campus. The other affected employees and operations will be transferred to different Digital locations, primarily in eastern Massachusetts.
In a series of meetings, over 2,100 Mill employees were told of the decision to relocate operations. They were told that the decision resulted from an analysis of the company's space requirements and efforts to consolidate operations into more efficient configurations with related groups more closely located.
The ongoing analysis of Digital-owned facilities is the second tier of a comprehensive real estate strategy that began in 1989. The first tier of that strategy was to move, where possible, from leased to owned facilities. So far, the strategy has resulted in a reduction of over 8.7 million square feet of space and an annual savings of $219 million.
"This was a very difficult decision for the company to make," said Robert B. Palmer, president and CEO of Digital. "This site holds a very special place in our history. As the location where the company first planted its roots, The Mill has acted as a strong symbol for Digital.
"With the changing needs of the company, however, our ability to use The Mill in the most functional and efficient way has diminished, and this move has become necessary," Palmer continued. "We have chosen to keep Corporate Headquarters in Maynard and, because of the importance of the Mill site to Maynard and to Digital, the company has appointed a Mill Program Manager. The program manager will act as a focused resource to work directly with the Town of Maynard and will be the company's liaison with Governor Weld's Administration, the federal government and private developers to help create plans for reuse of the complex that will generate the maximum economic and social value."
The original mill structure was built in 1847 by Amory Maynard and William Knight, principals of the Assabet Mills. Reorganized in 1862 as the Assabet Manufacturing Company, it supplied woolen cloth, blankets and flannels to the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1899, the American Woolen Company purchased the property, expanded and operated it until 1950, when the mill closed. In 1957, Digital Equipment Corporation began operation in 8,600 square feet of rented space on the mill site. As its needs expanded, Digital continued to lease additional space at the site until 1974, when it purchased the entire 11-acre site with 1.1 million square feet of floor space.
