DIGIBOARD INTRODUCES FIRST PRODUCTS FOR SUN SPARC MARKET; CLUSTER CONTROLLER SYSTEM OFFERS COST-EFFECTIVE WAY TO ADD FROM 16 TO 896 USERS

MINNEAPOLIS, July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- DigiBoard, the leading provider of connectivity solutions for multiuser microcomputer systems, today introduced the SBus C/X and SBus EPC/X, the company's first serial port products for the Sun SPARC computing environment.
The SBus C/X and SBus EPC/X are high-performance cluster controller systems offering cost-effective ways to add from 16 to 896 users to multiuser and networked systems via asynchronous serial ports. The systems provide superior performance and capabilities when compared to existing SBus serial products, offering higher speeds, greater CPU efficiency, more channels, longer distance capabilities and better diagnostic functions.
The SBus C/X and SBus EPC/X are also ideal for applications requiring multiple high-speed modems or digital communication devices. Aggregate throughput on an SBus EPC/X system supports 115 Kbps on 96 ports. The ability to sustain this many ports at 115 Kbps makes the SBus EPC/X ideal for high-speed modems that interface at such high speeds at the hardware level. Unlike any other SBus-based multiport solution, the SBus C/X and SBus EPC/X systems can act as remote multiplexors allowing cluster groups to be configured remotely across telephone lines using standard analog modems or via DSU/CSU equipment on a 56 Kbps leased line.
"DigiBoard developed the SBus C/X and SBus EPC/X in recognition of Sun's growing share of the commercial workstation and server marketplace and its participation in corporate downsizing," said Joe Toste, DigiBoard product manager. "Many commercial transaction processing applications, such as customer service, bank trading and inventory control, require large numbers of users on a single system. The SBus C/X and SBus EPC/X, which maximize a system's potential to support multiple users, will only increase in demand as this market grows."
The DigiBoard SBus system consists of a host adapter card that resides in the Sun host computer, attached to one or more DigiBoard C/CON-16 or EPC/CON-16 concentrator boxes. Each box provides connections for up to 16 users via standard RS-232, DB25 or RJ45 connectors. The adapter card can support up to 14 EPC/CON-16s or eight C/CON-16s for a maximum of 224 ports per slot. Up to four SBus adapters may be installed in the host allowing for a maximum of 896 users.
Using synchronous cabling, the C/CON-16 concentrators can be located as far as 4,000 feet from the host. With the DigiBoard Fiber Link option, standard fiber optic cabling can be used to locate the first concentrator as far as 1.2 miles from the host. Add synchronous modems, and workgroups can be located anywhere in the world.
As a 16-port solution, the DigiBoard SBus C/X outperforms conventional serial port boards. Each concentrator box is intelligent, enhancing the system's performance by processing the data of the peripherals before transferring it to the host. As ports are added, the SBus C/X is capable of sustaining data transmission rates of up to 38.4 Kbps with as many as 64 concurrent users. Each serial channel has surge protection and each concentrator box has pass-through fault tolerance so in the unlikely event that a concentrator should fail, no other concentrators in the chain are affected.
The SBus EPC/X is an enhanced performance cluster system, utilizing RISC technology for maximum speed and power. The SBus EPC/X offers all the features of the SBus C/X while providing enhanced performance of 115.2 Kbps for systems with up to 96 concurrent users, and guaranteed 38.4 Kbps with 896 users. In addition, the SBus EPC/X features DigiBoard's exclusive Extended Bus Interface (EBI) allowing a single EPC/CON-16 concentrator to support from 16 to 64 users by adding up to three low-cost DigiBoard PORTS/16em 16-port connector modules. As a result, the SBus EPC/X can support workgroups with 32, 48 or 64 users at a dramatically lower cost per user than any other cluster system.
The SBus C/X and SBus EPC/X will ship with driver support for Solaris 2.0 and higher. The systems will begin shipping in August 1993 and will be displayed for the first time at INTEROP Fall, August 25-27, at booth 6384. The SBus C/X costs $2,395 and the SBus EPC/X costs $2,895. Prices include the adapter card and one concentrator box. Both products will be available through DigiBoard's worldwide distribution channels.
