DIGGIN' THOSE DINOS.

Byline: Monica Valencia Staff Writer

World renowned paleontologist Robert Bakker's love for prehistoric pre·his·tor·ic   also pre·his·tor·i·cal
adj.
1. Of, relating to, or belonging to the era before recorded history.

2. Of or relating to a language before it is first recorded in writing.
creatures began in 1953 when as a fourth-grader he picked up an issue of Life magazine featuring a cover story on dinosaurs <onlyinclude> This list of dinosaurs is a comprehensive listing of all genera that have ever been included in the superorder Dinosauria, excluding class Aves (birds, both living and those known only from fossils) and purely vernacular terms. .

Since then, dinosaurs have been his life. Bakker incited that same passion in children Saturday at the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Fair's DinoQuest exhibit, as he quizzed a group of attentive grade-school children on their dinosaur knowledge.

The paleontologist rewarded the children with one of his marker drawings of dinosaurs if they identified the ancient giants correctly.

``I want to be a paleontologist when I grow up,'' said 7-year-old Crystal Sheean.

Many at the Fairplex recognized Bakker from the character Dr. Robert Burke Robert Burke may refer to:
  • Robert O'Hara Burke (1821-1861), Australian explorer
  • Robert E. Burke (1847-1901), U.S. Representative from Texas
  • Robert Malachy Burke (1907-1998), Christian Socialist and philanthropist
  • Robert C.
in ``Jurassic Park.'' The Burke character, a bearded paleontologist from Wyoming with a cowboy hat, was modeled after Bakker.

``He was eaten by a Tyrannosaurus Tyrannosaurus (tīrăn'ōsôr`əs, tĭr–) [Gr.,=tyrant lizard], member of a family, Tyrannosauridae, of bipedal carnivorous saurischian dinosaurs characterized by having strong hind limbs, a muscular tail, and short  rex (in the movie),'' said Crystal's twin sister, Jennifer Sheean.

Bakker devotes his life to unearthing the secrets of the prehistoric creatures, digging for dinosaur fossils in Mongolia, Africa and Wyoming.

``My real love is digging in Wyoming,'' Bakker said. ``It's the real Jurassic Park.''
