DIFFERENT TEAM BUT SAME RESULT? QUARTZ HILL TO TRY TO DEFEND GOLDEN LEAGUE TITLE WITH NEWCOMERS.

Byline: Lauren Gustus Staff Writer

Quartz Hill's girls' tennis team wants to get the usual output this season, but it will have to use a completely different input than it did last year.

Quartz Hill is in danger of having a run as the Golden League champion stopped at 14 years. This season it will compete without seven starters from last year's team, all lost to graduation Graduation is the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the associated ceremony. The date of event is often called degree day. The event itself is also called commencement, convocation or invocation. .

But coach Bill Lenaway isn't concerned. If Quartz Hill gets the two players it's hoping for, then it should easily be in contention for another league title. The two newcomers have already been mentioned at programs from Littlerock to Lancaster as players to watch out for.

One is Sonya Reynolds, ranked No. 96 by the United States Tennis Association “USTA” redirects here. For other uses, see USTA (disambiguation).

yet if she'll be our number two,'' Lenaway said of Singh. ``I haven't seen too much of her yet. But she could be the third or fourth player in the league as a freshman.''

Senior Melissa Talvitie, a doubles player, has seen Singh.

``I think she'll do great,'' Talvitie said. ``I haven't really gotten to know her personally, but I saw her this summer and she's really good.''

As of Monday, Lenaway wasn't sure if Reynolds was 100 percent committed to playing for Quartz Hill. But he was excited about the prospect.

``Her whole game is strong,'' Lenaway said. ``She's an experienced USTA tournament player. If Sonya comes out, it definitely increases our wins. If my top two singles players are as good as I think they are, then we're at a definite advantage.''

While Quartz Hill should be strong in singles, Lenaway thinks doubles will be the key to another Golden League title. Each team in the league is expected to have a solid doubles duo. Quartz Hill's lone returning varsity player is Talvitie, who should be at the No. 1 doubles spot.

``I think doubles are important,'' Talvitie said. ``Just as important as singles.''

The low doubles pairs are Lenaway's biggest concern.

``We're obviously going to be lacking experience in the lower doubles,'' Lenaway said. ``But our junior varsity team For the American rock band, see .

The remainder of Quartz Hill's team will be filled out by members of last year's junior varsity team.
