DIAMOND giants De Beers have insisted they will remain profitable this year, even if turnover drops by as much as 50 per cent.

The South African group, who mine 40 per cent of the world's diamonds, said they were confident of surviving two more years of recession.

Finance director Stuart Brown said: "Trading conditions are tough but, because we saw it early and took dramatic steps around the business, we're in a position to weather trade in 2009 and 2010 without recourse A phrase used by an endorser (a signer other than the original maker) of a negotiable instrument (for example, a check or promissory note) to mean that if payment of the instrument is refused, the endorser will not be responsible.  to shareholder funds."
