game, one that doesn't count on a team's baseball record. Several of the opposing players usually have gray hair, large stomachs and couldn't make it around the bases without an oxygen tank.

But alumni baseball games reveal more about a program's success than any won-loss record. When star players decide to return en masse en masse

years after graduating from high school, it tells plenty about what they thought of their coach and program.

Several of his alumni teammates excused themselves from the game to hurry home and bring back footballs for Elway to sign.

``We had a great time,'' said alumni coach Darryl Stroh, who retired as Granada Hills coach at the end of last season.

Most of the Granada Hills players got to shake hands to perform the customary act of civility by clasping and moving hands, as an expression of greeting, farewell, good will, agreement, etc.

``It was more of a pleasure to meet him than to get his autograph,'' sophomore first baseman Jon Bringuier said.

What a sight to see these former El Camino Real players all grown up - some with their young sons and daughters cheering from the sideline - as they tried to show they hadn't lost their athletic skills.

Last Saturday, with perfect weather and the smell of a barbecuespreading around the diamond, Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  held its alumni game in Sherman Oaks. There was feisty Jim Barrett

, class of '52, hitting behind his son, Denny ('82). There was Ryan Stromsborg ('93) smiling through the dugout at his brother, Kevin, now the starting first baseman.

``I got a bet he's going to get hit by (pitcher) Chris Garza,'' Ryan said.

When P.A. announcer Charlie Tuna mentioned that the alumni had never lost to the Notre Dame varsity, alumni coach Jody Breeden promised, ``And we never will either.''

The most emotional moment came before the game. All the Notre Dame varsity and JV players were lined up by the dugout. Head coach Tom Dill had his arm around 15-year-old freshman JV player Matt Lutz, who had tears in his eyes. Older brother Andy ('95) was at his side. Father Al Lutz ('68) was given a special award for his many contributions to the program.

Matt and Andy knew it could be the last alumni game their father will attend because he is seriously ill with colon cancer colon cancer, cancer of any part of the colon (often called the large intestine). Colon cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. . Afterward, teammates put their arms around Matt, offering comfort and support. Al received a warm applause from the crowd, then took a seat to watch the game.

There were lots of hits, smiles and laughter. ``I'm trying not to get hurt - that's my main goal,'' said Bob Mandeville (Notre Dame '80).

The alumni's unbeaten record remained perfect. The game ended in a 12-12 tie. Kevin Stromsborg didn't get hit by Garza, but he did hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth.

What I'll remember most about this supposedly meaningless alumni game was the real friendship and camaraderie on display and the love two teen-age boys have for their father.

Isn't that what sports should be all about?
