DIAMOND POLISHING HIS NEW ACT BEFORE TAKING IT OUT ON THE ROAD.

Byline: Marilyn Beck & Stacy Jenel Smith

Neil Diamond heads out on tour Oct. 23 with the hope audiences accept a show that includes selections from his two-CD ``The Movie Album: As Time Goes By,'' which hits stores Oct. 27. Neil points out that, great as some of those classic film songs are, ``They're not my hits. I think my fans will approve, but I'm not betting the mortgage on it.''

The singing star expects that his latest release - which AMC (Advanced Mezzanine Card) See AdvancedTCA.  will help launch with a Nov. 4 TV special, ``Neil Diamond: The Making of the Movie Album'' - will keep him busy on the road, both here and abroad, through most of next year.

After that, he plans to record ``something completely original again, just Neil Diamond songs.''

And after that?

``At some point,'' reveals Diamond in an exclusive interview with this column, ``I'd like to do another country album.'' He recorded his 1996 ``Tennessee Moon'' in Nashville and says, ``I'd like to go back there, where there are so many talented people, and record another CD.''

Right now, the perennial superstar, who's sold more than 110 million albums, is trying his best to stay in shape for the rigors of the road.

``I'm 100 percent. You need to be 110 percent to do a tour,'' notes Neil. He adds that until just three weeks ago, he was ``up to my neck finishing the album. It was a major, major project - working with 60- to 80-piece orchestras, with at least a dozen of the top Hollywood arrangers.''

Right now, she'd rather talk about the music and the movies in her life. She'll be making a big-screen love story that Kate Lanier is penning - and which will feature music by Mariah. She describes the project as ``on a fast track.''

Out of this world

An Oct. 19 production start has been set for ``Crusade,'' the mysterious ``Babylon 5'' spinoff series being mounted by the sci-fi show's creator-producer J. Michael Straczynski. It's mysterious even to the cast, it turns out. ``I know I'll play the same character,'' reports Tracy Scoggins Not to be confused with the American football player Tracy Scroggins.

The videoland view

In the WB's midseason sitcom, ``Kate Joplin,'' former radio personality-cum-actor Jay Thomas plays the program manager to a radio personality played by Park Overall. ``But I'm trying to make this guy more human than any general manager I've ever had,'' says Thomas. ``When I saw the Howard Stern movie, `Private Parts private parts n. men or women's genitalia, excluding a woman's breasts, usually referred to in prosecutions for "indecent exposure" or production and/or sale of pornography. ,' his dealings with management of radio stations is true for all disc jockeys - the almost coming to blows with people, and the screaming, yelling and fights.'' Thomas says his character in ``Kate Joplin'' won't be quite that bad. ``I play a guy who's just really into crunching numbers, although I do get angry easily, like most general managers ... If your ratings are good, everything you're doing that day is hysterical. If your ratings aren't good, you're not so funny anymore.''
