Sefton is raising awareness with local diabetics about eye health and the importance of check ups.

Linda Turner, one of NHS Sefton's Public Health consultants, said: "Diabetic retinopathy diabetic retinopathy

is one of the most common causes of blindness in the UK but if it's caught early and treated, 90% of diabetics wouldn't go blind.

"Retinopathy retinopathy /ret·i·nop·a·thy/ (ret?i-nop´ah-the) any noninflammatory disease of the retina.

the retina, the tissues in the back of the eye that deal with light.

"Damage to these can seriously affect your sight and if untreated can cause blindness. It's really important for Sefton diabetics to have their free routine eye examination to detect any problems early so they can be treated effectively."

Every year Sefton's diabetic residents, who are 12 years and over, are sent a letter inviting them to phone the eye screening call centre and make an appointment.

Health chiefs are encouraging diabetics to understand their condition and take control by following simple advice:. Take control of your blood sugars effectively. See your GP regularly to check blood pressure and don't let it get raised. Keep regular eye screening appointments. Get advice if you have problems with your sight.

For your eyes and general health you should also have your cholesterol levels checked regularly and quit if you are a smoker.

If you have received a letter for your free eye screening call the Diabetic Eye Screening call centre to make your appointment on 0151 529 8401.
