DIABETES EVENT SIGNUPS BEGIN $150 PER PARTICIPANT IS FUND-RAISING GOAL.

Residents are urged to sign up now to participate as team captains or team members in the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  America's Walk for Diabetes, which will take place Sept. 30 in Valencia.

Walkers are encouraged to form teams with friends, family or co- co-
pref.

The Santa Clarita area walk will begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 30 on the corner of McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard and continue for six miles through the paseos of Valencia. The walk is a family event that emphasizes fitness, fun and diabetes awareness while raising funds for diabetes research, education and community outreach Outreach is an effort by an organization or group to connect its ideas or practices to the efforts of other organizations, groups, specific audiences or the general public.  programs.

``The money raised by America's Walk for diabetes will fund medical research to find a cure, as well as educational programs that help people learn how to effectively manage and treat diabetes in their daily lives,'' said Don Condra, co-chairman of the Santa Clarita Walk for Diabetes committee. Other co-chairmen are Don Kimball and Steve Marcus.

Last year's Santa Clarita walk raised a record-breaking $100,000, and organizers hope to raise even more this year. In all, more than 100,000 people in 275 cities across the country will be participating in the national fund-raiser.

Nearly 16 million Americans, including 2 million in California, have diabetes, and 80 percent of every dollar raised through the various Walks held across the country will directly benefit research and educational programs.
