WHAT: DHL, the world's leading global express delivery and
logistics company, will assist in the delivery of thousands
of pairs of shoes destined for elementary-age school
children in Iraq at a shoe send off event at Hewlett
Elementary School in Long Island on Friday, July 7, 2006.
DHL has donated the shipping services and several different
organizations joined together to make the event possible.
The shoes will be distributed to needy children in Iraq by
the U.S. military.
More than 2,000 collected shoes will make their way from
Hewlett Elementary School via police escort from the Nassau
County Police Department and the Port Authority Police
Department to the DHL Gateway at JFK International Airport.
WHO: Dozens of school children will be on hand at Hewlett
Elementary School to take part in the shoe send off event.
These children spent part of their summer collecting shoes
for the effort.
DHL, in partnership with the communities of Manhasset and
Garden City, Girl Scouts of Nassau County, Theodore
Roosevelt Council of Boy Scouts, the 77th Regional Readiness
Command, the Port Authority Police Department, the Nassau
County Police Department, Adelis International Security,
Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools, Unilever Adopt-a-Soldier
Platoon, Onsight Support, the DHL Riverside hub, the March
Joint Powers Authority and the U.S. military gathered new
shoes, flip flops, sneakers and sandals to distribute to
elementary-age school children in Iraq.

WHY: The U.S. military identified the need to provide shoes to
Iraqi school children following their interactions with the
children after sharing donated Girl Scout cookies with these
children earlier this year. Many of the children they
encountered did not have footwear.
