DGS to Hold Information Session on Telecommunications Services Contract.

As part of its open solicitation for the CALNET CALNET California Network  II multi-year telecommunications contract, the Department of General Services (DGS) will hold an information session for local agency stakeholders Stakeholders

All parties that have an interest, financial or otherwise, in a firm-stockholders, creditors, bondholders, employees, customers, management, the community, and the government.
 on December 15.

At the information session, local agency representatives will receive a briefing on the request for proposal, which was released November 8. There will also be a question-and-answer session. The session is designed both for current CALNET users and prospective future users. The conference will run from 10 a.m. to noon. It will be held at the auditorium in the Ronald Reagan Building Coordinates:  The Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center  at 300 Spring Street in Los Angeles. The public is welcome to attend. There is public parking available next to the building, costing $6 per day. CALNET is a contract for voice and data communications data communications, application of telecommunications technology to the problem of transmitting data, especially to, from, or between computers. In popular usage, it is said that data communications make it possible for one computer to "talk" with another.  service by DGS that provides the state and more than 2,000 local government agencies with communications services at discounted rates that are significantly below market prices.

The original CALNET contract, worth roughly $300 million per year, was awarded in December 1998. The new contract, which is called CALNET II, is expected to be awarded in December 2005. It will be a five-year contract with two optional one-year extensions.

Currently, the state receives communications service from a partnership between SBC (1) (SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, TX, www.sbc.com) A large, national telecommunications company that grew from a multitude of local and regional companies, including Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell, into a single, unified brand by 2002.  (formerly Pacific Bell) and MCI (1) (Media Control Interface) A high-level programming interface from Microsoft and IBM for controlling multimedia devices. It provides commands and functions to open, play and close the device.

. State government agencies under the executive branch of government receive communications service through CALNET, and many other state and local agencies participate voluntarily. In fact, more than half the business done through CALNET involves local agencies.
