DG Systems Asserts Leadership Role as Satellite Technology Innovator; Additional Patents Awarded for Satellite Streaming and IP Receivers.

DG Licenses Motorola for MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs).  Digital Audio Compression Encoding digital audio data to take up less storage space and transmission bandwidth. Audio compression typically uses lossy methods, which eliminate bits that are not restored at the other end. ADPCM and MP3 are examples of audio compression methods. DG Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: DGIT), the digital technology innovator for delivering and managing audio and video content to the broadcast industry, announced today that its StarGuide Digital Networks division was issued two new U.S. patents: High Bandwidth Broadcast System Having Localized Multicast Access to Broadcast Content and Satellite Receiver/Router, System, and Method of Use. Separately, DG announced that its Musicam USA unit has settled its intellectual property matter with Motorola, Inc. Under the terms of the agreement, Motorola has taken a license under Musicam USA's superior MUSICAM(R) MPEG digital audio compression technology.

New Patent Grants

The first of StarGuide's new patents (number 6,411,616) is directed to satellite streaming systems to the edge of the Internet and enterprise or other wide area networks (WANs), and the second (number 6,411,607) is directed to Internet Protocol See Internet and TCP/IP.

Motorola License

The scope of the Motorola intellectual property license of StarGuide's MPEG digital audio compression technology is for use in Motorola's DTH (Direct-To-Home) Typically refers to satellite TV broadcasting directly to a dish antenna on the roof of a house. See DBS.  Broadcasting Systems.
