DEVELOPMENT OF NEWHALL GETS A HAND CITY COUNCIL MAY LEND FUNDS.

``We're just hoping to continue the momentum that started with the holiday program,'' said Alex Vasquez, the city's economic development assistant.

The council also is expected to formally endorse a five-year strategic plan crafted by the Newhall Redevelopment Committee Plan that members reviewed several weeks ago.

The plan calls for existing parking lots to be improved and new ones to be built. The committee also will explore ways to encourage businesses to share parking lots.

The city's consultants also will explore expanding the boundaries of the redevelopment area and include businesses along Lyons Avenue.

Committee members also are focused on recruiting more businesses for the area, and working to integrate the newly formed Merchants' Association.

The merchants' association was formed after U.S. Rep. Howard P. ``Buck'' McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, created a furor furor /fu·ror/ (fu´ror) fury; rage.

The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Chamber of Commerce objected, saying potential competition between the two chambers could threaten business interests in the city.

The plan also calls for aesthetic improvements to be designed for San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the .

The council will also fill four vacancies on the redevelopment committee from a field of 13 candidates.

The council's actions are expected to be the culmination of a period of intense progress in the effort to turn the sagging economic fortunes of Newhall around.

The chairman of the committee, Larry Bird Larry Joe Bird (born December 7,1956) is a retired American NBA basketball player, widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, and one of the best clutch performers in the history of sports. , said the major change has been the increasing enthusiasm of area merchants.
