DEVELOPER PUSHING FOR CEMETERY ON THE PLOT OF FAILED SUBDIVISION.

Byline: Helen Gao Staff Writer

GLENDALE - Two months after the City Council turned down its proposal to build a subdivision in the Verdugo Mountains The Verdugo Mountains are a small mountain range located just south of the western San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County, Southern California, The United States of America (USA). The range is commonly known simply as the Verdugos. , Gregg's Artistic Homes is pushing to build a cemetery on the site instead.

Tonight, the developer will ask the City Council to set a public hearing to consider repealing the Environmental and Planning Board's decision to require a new environmental report on the cemetery project.

Lee Gregg, vice president of Gregg's Artistic Homes, noted the city has already done a study on the cemetery project as an alternative to the 572- home subdivision the company initially proposed.

``If you have already done an EIR EIR n. popular acronym for environmental impact report, required by many states as part of the application to a county or city for approval of a land development or project. Gregg also argued that the cemetery project would have significantly less impact than housing on the city. Whereas housing would have required police and fire services

Environmentalists, such as Marc Stirdivant, are not convinced that a cemetery would be appropriate for the area.

``In our view, the developer is basically trying to pull a fast one,'' he said.

Stirdivant said the cemetery project will likely involve massive grading and cause significant adverse impacts to the hillsides.

``It is not a good project. It's extremely damaging to the environment,'' said Stirdivant, head of Volunteers Organized in Conserving con·serve
