Officials from Encino-based Larwin have told the school board they have decided not to include a school in the heart of a proposed housing development. ``They said it's it's 1. After nearly three years of studying potential school sites, preparing plans and considering costs, the district had finally made a decision to go with the Larwin property. Now officials begin a new search. ``You just have to go back to the drawing board,'' said Nishino, who added the district will look again at several alternative sites. ``Of course you're disappointed, but that's what happens sometimes.'' After rejecting about a dozen sites, the school district had narrowed its search to two locations in the Sloan Canyon Sloan Canyon is a National Conservation Area (NCA) administered by the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The selection created controversy in the community, with many residents opposed to building a school as part of a Larwin development. Angry at the school board's decision, a group of residents vowed to fight the move. In fact, the site selection might have been a factor in the Nov. 2 school board election where one incumbent was ousted. Castaic school district officials said that they expect their elementary school population of 2,003 to double in the next few years. The school was not expected to open until 2004, while another campus, North Lakes Elementary school, is slated to open next fall to accommodate 500 pupils. The unnamed Sloan Canyon elementary school would house an estimated 600 pupils. |
