DEUTSCHE BUNDESPOST TELEKOM TO ACTIVATE FIBER OPTIC LINK BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND GERMANY

DEUTSCHE BUNDESPOST TELEKOM TO ACTIVATE FIBER OPTIC LINK
BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND GERMANY
NEW YORK, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Thirty-five international telecommunications carriers among them, Deutsche Bundespost Telekom announced today that they will activate service between the United States and Germany this weekend on the transatlantic portion of the first transatlantic fiber optic system to directly link the United States with Germany. Service on the system's extension form Germany to the Netherlands is scheduled for November 1.
Called TAT-10, the new $300 million (US) transatlantic system will be able to carry up to 60,000 simultaneous telephone conversations, or the equivalent in any combination of voice, data and video signals.
As with its predecessor TAT-9, which went into service in March, TAT-10 operates at 565 megabits per second over each of two optical- fiber pairs, with a third fiber pair included for restoration.
The 7,200-kilometer (4,500 miles) TAT-10 system crosses the Atlantic Ocean from Green Hill, Rhode Island to the North of Scotland and transits the North Sea to Norden, Germany. It is expected also to provide on this route much-needed communications capacity to the newly opened markets in Eastern and Central Europe.
TAT-10 investors include telecommunications carriers from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The construction of TAT-10 was completed in less than half the time a project of this size normally requires. "Today, customers reach Germany primarily via TAT-8 and TAT-9, or by satellite," says Al Stark, vice president of AT&T's International Operations Division. "TAT-10 is our response to their increased demand for more fiber connectivity and route diversity into Europe." In addition, a number of industry records were set with this project. During its maiden voyage, AT&T's cable ship, the "Global Link", completed the deep sea portion of the system in a record 21 days. Also, the Dutch ship, "Dock Express 20," and the British vessel, "Stena Seaspread," installed about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) of specially armored cable crossing 11 natural gas and oil pipelines in the North Sea. This installation included the longest stretch of telecommunications cable buried beneath the ocean floor.
Deutsche Bundespost Telekom is the largest European telecommunications carrier with revenues of approximately $27 billion annually. Deutsche Telekom, Inc., their United States subsidiary, has offices in New York, Chicago and San Francisco with plans to open an office in Atlanta this year.
