Excellent visuals: A first for this media market
With the flick of a magician's wrist -- and the push of a button -- Detroit Edison and the Wake-Pratt Construction Co. will unveil Michigan's first all-electric automated SMART HOUSE at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, in Oakland Township.
This 5,000-square-foot computerized demonstration SMART HOUSE allows homeowners to operate the appliances and various systems in the home more economically and conveniently.
Visitors to the house -- one of only five in the world -- will see the video distribution system which automatically switches the television channel to the baby's room when the baby cries. Also, a voice activated "Butler-in-A-Box" turns on kitchen appliances. Just speak into it and watch what happens. A colorful and user-friendly touch-screen monitor controls all the features in the home. The home's heating and cooling, security, lighting, safety, communication and entertainment systems can be activated while the homeowner is away, or still in bed.
Representatives of Detroit Edison, Wake-Pratt, the Maryland-based SMART HOUSE L.P., and Oakland Township will speak briefly, then magician Doug Scherer will help Detroit Edison's SMART HOUSE expert Bill Steel "magically" activate the SMART HOUSE. Steel then will conduct tours of the house.
SMART HOUSE opens to the public on Thursday as part of Homearama Spring which runs from May 7-25.
The house is located 30 miles north of Detroit, in the Meadows at Oakland Farms subdivision on Gunn Road, less than one mile west of Rochester Road.
