DETROIT EDISON POSTS RECORD SALES YEAR

DETROIT, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- An economic rebound and hot summer weather across southeastern Michigan helped Detroit Edison (NYSE: DTE) to record electricity sales in 1993, up 5.6 percent from 1992.
Strong demand by all major customer segments -- residential, commercial and industrial -- led to the annual sales record of 42.96 billion kilowatthours (kWh) of electricity. The previous record was 41.08 billion kWh in 1991.
Heavy summer air-conditioning use was reflected in a 6.4-percent increase in residential sales last year to 12.03 billion kWh. Commercial sales during the year also were up -- 5.1 percent from 1992 to 9.1 billion kWh.
A continuing economic recovery pushed industrial sales to 19.52 billion kWh in 1993, a 5.2-percent gain from the previous year. The utility in 1993 broke seven monthly demand records and set a new all-time hourly peak demand in August.
Total 1993 sales -- including sales to other utilities -- increased 6.1 percent to 46.58 billion kWh.
Strength in automotive and non-automotive manufacturing, and the steel industry, boosted December 1993 sales in southeastern Michigan 3.5 percent over December 1992 -- 3.7 billion kWh compared with 3.6 billion kWh.
December sales to industrial customers, buoyed by a 17.8-percent gain among non-automotive manufacturers, rose 8.8 percent over December 1992.
Commercial sales rose 4 percent during the month while residential sales were down .9 percent from December 1992 levels.
Total December sales -- including sales to other utilities -- increased 2.4 percent to 3.9 billion kWh.
