DETROIT EDISON, LOCAL 223 REACH TENTATIVE CONTRACT

DETROIT, May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- After more than 13 months of off- and-on negotiations and difficult discussions, Detroit Edison (NYSE: DTE) and Local 223, Utility Workers Union of America, have reached a tentative contract agreement. Details of the agreement will remain undisclosed until a ratification vote by union membership, which is expected by the end of next week.
In a joint statement of congratulations to the bargaining teams, John E. Lobbia, Detroit Edison chairman and chief executive officer, and George Manoogian, Local 223 president, said: "We are pleased that we have reached an agreement on the contract issues. During a time of increasing competition in the utility industry, many impediments to successful conclusion of our bargaining were recognized and overcome. We believe we are entering a new era of cooperation between the union and management and apologize for any inconvenience experienced by our customers during this dispute."
Both parties particularly acknowledged and applauded the assistance of private mediator William J. Usery Jr. Usery is one of the nation's foremost authorities in dispute resolution and a former U.S. Secretary of Labor.
The 2,800 Detroit Edison employes represented by Local 223 have been working without a contract since their previous agreement expired June 1, 1992.
