DETROIT EDISON'S RELIABILITY COMMITMENT SHOWS RESULTS

DETROIT, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Electrical system improvements are starting to show results for Detroit Edison (NYSE: DTE) customers in southeastern Michigan.
During the past year, the utility has reduced outages by nearly 30 percent and shortened the length of unavoidable outages by 70 percent compared with the average of the previous three years.
"Despite a series of severe electrical storms that rolled through the area in recent weeks, our customers experienced relatively few outages," said Robert J. Buckler, senior vice president, Energy Marketing and Distribution.
"It appears accelerated line-clearance work, overhead line maintenance and lightning protection is beginning to pay dividends."
Line clearance is a major part of the utility's three-year, $236 million program to improve electrical service. The work includes maintaining 10-foot clearances between tree branches and wires. Trees that touch energized lines can conduct electricity and pose safety hazards. In addition, interference from just one tree can cause outages that affect hundreds of customers served by the same electrical circuit.
Detroit Edison's line-clearance crews will continue projects as well as begin new work in 49 communities in July and August.
From 1991 through this year, the company will have spent $101 million on line clearance.
All work is performed by professional line-clearance crews. Trees are trimmed according to National Arborist Association standards, which are designed to protect the trees and keep them healthy.
The utility's reliability improvement program also includes adding lightning protection and new circuits, and replacing worn or damaged equipment. A new Customer Communication Center and toll-free telephone number -- 1-800-477-4747 -- also were established as part of the service reliability improvement program.
During July and August, line-clearance work will continue or begin in the following areas:
Ingham County: Wheatfield Township, White Oak Township.
Lapeer County: Lapeer, Lapeer Township, Mayfield Township, Oregon Township.
Lenawee County: Clinton Township, Macon Township.
