DETMER MAKES IMPACT; T.O. GRAD GOOD FIT AT STANFORD.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

Say you're a women's college volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.  player and your team is playing Stanford.

As you leap forward and ready your arm to swing into the ball, you look across the net. Stanford has a three-woman block up. One is All-American outside hitter Kerri Walsh Kerri Lee Walsh (born August 15, 1978) is an American beach volleyball player. Walsh was born in California to Tim and Margie Walsh and grew up in Saratoga, California. As a high school student, she played on the varsity team at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose. . The third is freshman Jenn Detmer.

It's obvious where you're aiming. You hit the ball - and Detmer blocks it. The ball hits the floor at your feet on your team's side. Detmer excitedly jumps up and down. Point to Stanford.

This was the situation in which Detmer, a Thousand Oaks High School Thousand Oaks High School is a high school established in 1962 and located in Thousand Oaks, California. Even though she was bothered by sore tonsils tonsils, name commonly referring to the palatine tonsils, two ovoid masses of lymphoid tissue situated on either side of the throat at the back of the tongue.  throughout the season, she came to the Cardinal with strong blocking skills and proved she could play on that level. She appeared in 59 games and got 56 blocks to go with her 72 kills and became the only non-starter non-starter

Detmer, 6-foot-3, never expected to play as much as she did, being a freshman on a team with several All-Americans that won the title last year. Plus, she had to play behind two All-American middle blockers, Barbara Ifejika and Paula McNamee.

It actually was an ideal situation for Detmer. She could learn from some of the top players in preparation for her sophomore season, when she will be the only returning middle blocker.

From the first day of practice, when she blocked Folkl, Detmer knew she wasn't going to ride the bench all season.

``Just playing with them taught me a lot,'' she said. ``I never looked forward to practices as much. It was so incredible to watch them. I was in awe of everyone. Kristin Folkl is my idol.''

She made her first appearance in the Aug. 22 opener against Texas A&M and blocked an All-American. She immediately launched into what would become her other trademark of the season: the giddy celebration.

Because Detmer looks younger than her age, her excitement looks child-like and makes fans and teammates laugh.

``The crowd gets a kick out of my reactions,'' she said. ``I'm the jump start.''

Her best game was Oct. 11, when she got seven kills and seven blocks against Arizona Arizona (âr'əzō`nə), state in the southwestern United States. It is bordered by Utah (N), New Mexico (E), Mexico (S), and, across the Colorado R., Nevada and California (W).  State. She got her first and only ace Nov. 14 against Washington.

In the national semifinal against Long Beach State, Detmer got a block and an assisted block on the match-clinching point.

one more time in the fourth game.

``They called me and my face went white,'' Detmer said. ``Coach said, `Put some color into your face.' I was scared.''

There won't be time to be fearful next season. Nor is there a chance now, since Detmer has much off-season work to do.

Wicks said Detmer, as the sole returning middle blocker, will have a much larger role next year. Her leadership and experience will be critical.

``She's got a little to learn, but it's not unusual. Very few freshmen come in knowing what it takes,'' Shaw said. ``She's had one quarter. Now we find out how hard she'll work without a game coming up.''
