``We don't know what they saw, but we'd sure like to talk to them about it,'' sheriff's Lt. Joe Hartshorne said Monday.

The name of the man, described as a Lancaster resident in his early 50s, was not immediately released because authorities could not locate his family.

About 6:45 p.m. Sunday, people told a security guard at the shopping center in the 2700 block of West Avenue L that a man was lying in an alley behind the stores, Hartshorne said. The security guard found the man and notified paramedics and deputies.

Detectives said Robert Deatherage, 63, of Palmdale was arrested on suspicion of murder and was being held without the possibility of bail.

Detectives said the victim and Deatherage had known each other for years and were involved in some sort of dispute over the ownership of a car.

The victim went to Deatherage's apartment in the 1000 block of East Avenue R, where the men got into an argument and the victim was shot once with a handgun about 3:30 p.m., detectives said.

Paramedics pronounced Thrasher dead at the scene, and Deatherage was arrested. Deatherage has not talked to detectives, Hartshorne said.

``All we know, because there's no one for us to talk to, is there was some kind of dispute over a car,'' Hartshorne said.
