DESKTOP MANUFACTURING POISED FOR MID-1990S WORLDWIDE EXPLOSION
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The desktop manufacturing industry, still in its infancy, is poised for tremendous growth in the 1990s powered by new applications in the automotive, aerospace, medical, and consumer electronics industries, said a new study just issued by Market Intelligence.
Total worldwide sales of desktop manufacturing systems will increase more than 30-fold from $32 million in 1991 to over $1 billion by 1998, projected the report, Desktop Manufacturing Systems: Rapid Prototyping Techniques Take the World by Storm.
Continuing growth in the 3-D CAD workstation market will drive desktop manufacturing revenues since these 3-D CAD drawings are needed as input for desktop manufacture.
The markets will favor systems that are extremely flexible in the materials with which they can work, with the clear trend toward the use of multiple materials including plastics, photopolymers and investment casting wax. Such flexibility is vital so that systems will be able to adapt to future technological opportunities.
Desktop manufacturing revenues are projected to grow at a rapidly accelerating rate, rising from relatively modest current levels to over 50 percent in 1993 and over 80 percent by 1995.
Stereolithography, currently the only segment shipping commercial products, will provide the largest proportion of growth in the early and mid-1990s. More than 300 systems have been installed worldwide, the majority in the United States, and the market is heavily dominated by 3-D Systems, which has pioneered desktop manufacturing technology with stereolithography.
While there are some dozen competitors currently active, only a handful have introduced commercial products. Other companies that have started to make their rapid prototyping technology units commercially available include Cubital, using solid-based curing, Helysis, with laminated object manufacturing, and Quadrax, with laser modeling using photosensitive polymers. In Japan, Mitsubishi, Mitsui and Sony have also begun marketing desktop manufacturing products.
Other technologies either in beta testing or still in development include selective laser sintering, photosolidification, fused deposition modeling and ballistic particle manufacturing.
The United States will maintain and even enhance its leadership position despite the diversification that will occur in the market, increasing its share of sales from 61 percent in 1991 to 65 percent in 1998.
