DESIGNCAD 3D VERSION 4.0 INCREASED SPEED, REALISTIC SHADING

DESIGNCAD 3D VERSION 4.0 INCREASED SPEED, REALISTIC SHADING
CHICAGO, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- American Small Business Computers Inc. (ASBC) ships new DesignCAD Version 4.0, adding realistic shading and significantly greater speed. Bruce Taylor, ASBC president, stated Version 4 is "a fantastic product of many month's work. Version 4 thrusts us into the high end CAD market at a low end price."
DesignCAD 3D users can now shade objects in quick or realistic shading, and control ambient and diffuse reflection as well as specular reflection and the material of the object. A materials library is included to help the user simulate granite, steel, marble and other textures. Taylor stated, "This shading advancement approaches photo-realistic quality." A selectable color palette, new to Version 4, allows users to choose from thousands of different colors. DesignCAD 3D now includes the Common User Access (CUA) compatible interface for drop down menus, using the Alt keys. Pop-up helps screens also enhance new Version 4.0.
In addition to improved shading, ASBC programmers re-wrote Version 4 into "C," speeding applications such as zooming and retrieving by over 200 percent. A file that took 17 seconds to load on Version 3.1 takes only 7 seconds in new Version 4, a 114 percent improvement. This advancement causes quick shading in Version 4 to display 60 percent faster than quick shading in Version 3.1. This conversion causes the DesignCAD drawing file to be half its former size, saving valuable disk space. SlideShow enhancements are far-reaching. The BasicCAD Programming Language is extensively revised. File management exhibits improvements is several areas.
Version 4 has many features. A new context sensitive "on-line manual" is included in the package, permitting users to display a compete description of any DesignCAD 3D command at the touch of a button. The View command allows users to rotate a drawing's position in real time to quickly and easily fine-tune viewing angles. Users now control the number of facets (or sides) on solid objects such as cones and spheres; specifying more facets results in a much smoother object. Other completely new commands are Fillet Edge, Fillet Corner, and ASBC's exclusive 3D Hammer commands (for 3D mesh editing.)
Editing a drawing or model is much easier for those who own mice. Version 4 now allows users to move along X, Y and Z axes simultaneously with the mouse. DesignCAD 3D adds support for COM3, COM4, and LPT3. A new 2-D point snap helps users find their way in a 3-D space (it snaps to the entity that "looks" the closest to the cursor in the 2-D regardless of whether it "really" is closest in true 3-D space).
Many new additions are direct results of DesignCAD 3D user requests and suggestions from the press. Taylor stated that the backbone of development for Version 4 was the "wish list," a group of suggested improvements and additions compiled from DesignCAD users' comments and from reviews. "Our users call or write asking for certain things to be added or changed, and we do whatever we can to accommodate them; also, we compile comments from editorial reviews," said Taylor.
DesignCAD 3D Version 4, like versions past, had full Boolean operations allowing users to add and subtract solid objects. DesignCAD 3D is compatible with hundreds of printers, plotters, digitizers and mice. Despite all the new advances, system requirements are an MS-DOS system with 2 Megs RAM and a hard disk.
DesignCAD 3D Version 4 retails for only $499 and is available through dealers worldwide and through American Small Business Computers Inc., One American Way, Pryor, OK, 74361. The phone number is 918-825-4844, fax is 918-825-6359. Updates for current designCAD 3D users are available for only $50.
