DESERT HIGH TO GET MAKEOVER.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. The work will include putting in energy-efficient windows and air- conditioning systems, remodeling remodeling /re·mod·el·ing/ (re-mod´el-ing) reorganization or renovation of an old structure.

``We are redoing the science labs, which will be a wonderful thing,'' Superintendent Bertha Boullion said.

The board voted last week to award contract, for which state modernization funds will pay 80 percent and locally raised revenue 20 percent. The state aid comes under Proposition 47, which California voters approved in November 2002. The state modernization money is for schools more than 50 years old. Desert High underwent $300,000 worth of electrical work this past summer as part of the project, Boullion said.

The remaining work will start in December and is expected to be done by August next year.

The Desert High upgrade is among nearly $6 million worth of modernization projects planned in Muroc in the next several years.

The requirements to graduate are the same but the scheduling is more flexible to allow students to earn their credits  will be modernized in the second phase.

Bids will be solicited in the spring on the second phase, with construction to start in June, Boullion said.

The Forbes campus was closed as a cost-cutting move and is now rented out for use as college classrooms. It may be reopened as an elementary school at some point in the future, Boullion said.
