DESERT HAVEN HONORS 13 FOR ASSISTANCE TO NONPROFIT.

LANCASTER -- Swift First Aid of Valencia received the top honor at the annual banquet for Desert Haven Enterprises, which provides training and employment for adults with developmental disabilities developmental disabilities (DD),

Twelve other awards were presented to individuals, groups and businesses that have assisted the 52-year-old nonprofit center and its clients over the last year.

``This is a most important evening for Desert Haven,'' Executive Director Jenni Moran said. ``It is an opportunity for us to recognize and to honor the outstanding contributions of community members and business leaders to the continued success of the organization and those we serve.''

The banquet also honors Desert Haven staffers and ``consumers,'' the term for its clients.

Swift has contracted with Desert Haven for six years, paying the center's clients to package and assemble first-aid kits and products.

Swift received the Henstra Award, named for Desert Haven founders Jack and Luella Henstra. The firm is a previous two-time recipient of the center's Contractor of the Year award.

Moran praised Swift Vice President Greg Higgins in particular.

``He hung in there with us, encouraged us, supported us, and even kicked us in the backside whenever necessary, but truly in love, with a commitment to seeing us through to becoming their No. 1 vendor,'' Moran said.

Other honorees included:

Contractors of the Year -- Leggett and Platt of Cerritos and Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. .

Employer of the Year -- Marla and Jeff Cortez of The Country Lane.

Friends of Desert Haven -- Southern California Edison Southern California Edison (or SCE Corp), the largest subsidiary of Edison International (NYSE: EIX), is the primary electricity supply company for much of Southern California. It provides 11 million people with electricity. , The Boeing Co., California Bank and Trust, and Deluxe Check Corp.

Above and Beyond the Call of Duty award -- Jim Rorex of Ace Painting Service.

Volunteer of the Year -- Jerry English.

Employees of the Year -- Shelley Runner, William Schaeffer, Nancy Ruelas and Adrian Jacquez.

Desert Haven started as a play group for the Henstra's young son. It developed into a preschool and later a job-training center and a workshop.

It now trains and employs nearly 400 people in a 24,000-square-foot vocational training center in the Lancaster Business Park and at local businesses, schools and elsewhere.
