DESERT CHRISTIAN AND NEWBURY PARK TEAMS RANK HIGH IN GPA RACE.

Desert Christian's girls' cross country team and Newbury Park's girls' volleyball and boys' cross country teams scored the highest collective grade point averages among area fall-sport teams. Each finished in the top 10 in the state.

Newbury Park's runners, with a team GPA of 3.62, finished tied for third in the state, and the volleyball team finished eighth with a 3.69 GPA, two posts higher than Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. In volleyball, Cornerstone Christian was 13th with 3.64, and Lancaster was 19th at 3.59.

In boys' cross country, Crespi followed Newbury Park in a tie for sixth with 3.60. Palmdale was tied for 17th at 3.45.

Additionally, 1,758 student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.5 during their season of competition were honored as Scholastic All-CIF award winners.

Adult volleyball: The Conejo Recreation and Park District Sports Office is accepting applications for the Adult Winter/Spring Volleyball league.

The coed volleyball league plays Sunday and Wednesday evenings, Feb. 7 through May, at the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  and Bouchard Community Center.

League fees are $191 for in-district and $229 for out-district teams (includes a $36 refundable forfeit fee).

The league is open to ages 16 and up and offers B, C and D divisions. Register at the Crowley House/Sports Office.

Softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies' : The Ballistic, an 16-and-under traveling softball team, is holding its annual tryouts for the upcoming season.

Tryouts take place Saturday from 9-11:30 a.m.

The Ballistic competed in more than 100 games last year throughout various cities and states, including the AFA AFA

Diving: Dive Thousand Oaks has openings for both the boys' and girls' diving teams.

The age limit is 7-17. High school students can get a jump on the season.

Divers learn the fundamentals of spring board diving with competitions in age groups. This is a year-round US Diving program.
